Sometimes I get up in the morning and have that one, sweet moment that really sets the tone for a wonderful day. Other times, from that moment on, it's all downhill. That's what today was like.
I got ready this morning and blabbed on and on to M about how I have my Data Plan all figured out. I've basically set up my phone for optimal (minimal) data usage:
It's kind of amazing, really. This involved turning off all alerts in both General and Application Settings. Instead, I set up notifications via text message (Free with Unlimited Texting!). I have pinpointed all the wireless hot-spots between work, home, favorite restaurants, and all major department stores, just in case I need to download a large file away from home. I downloaded a Data-Monitoring App which alerts me when I've used too much data. And, finally, I've calculated my daily data allowance, to set a short-term data goal for myself.
Anyway, after I explained to M my extremely detailed plan about how I was going to outsmart AT&T, he said, "I just wish you'd relax and enjoy your new phone... If you go over your data plan, it's not the end of the world."
So I hugged him tightly and told him I love him oh so much and that I don't show it nearly enough. He rubbed my big baby belly and said, "Oh, you're showing it." What a sweetheart! I went out the door with a big grin on my face.
Then the descent.
I got to work, and everyone was angry. Employees were yelling one complaint after another. One older gentleman accused me of not eating enough lunch for me and the baby. (He only saw me making a pasta bowl and didn't notice the plate next to me with a bagel & cream cheese, 2 cheese sticks, a yogurt, and blueberries.) When I escaped back to my desk, another employee ran over and said, "Come quick! B is dead!" We ran over to B's desk, but she was... only sleeping.
After that incident, the CEO came running through the building in a panic, screaming "Fire!! Fire!!!" We all rushed outside to find out that this was the company's way of saving money on an official fire-department Fire Drill.
When I got back inside, I decided to check my cellular data usage app. 1MB?! 1MB!! How could this have happened?? What is my phone doing? I have everything shut off!! I realized that, under General Settings for Mail, Calendars, etc., I had to shut off the "Push" option under "Fetch New Data". It was checking for mail almost constantly throughout the day, when I didn't have access to wi-fi.
Good lord... "Siri, hold my calls." I'm putting up the Fly-Away Post-It and going home!
